Irene Seaman was born with a green thumb. Growing up in the greenhouse business both before and after her family's immigration from Europe, Irene became interested in flowers both as a passion and as a business opportunity. And so it was in 1969 that she, along with her father Walter Behnke, opened her first flower shop, Behnke's Florist, in the Crossroads Shopping Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They quickly built a large and faithful clientele, blossoming into one of the area's leading florist shops. Since then, franchise locations have evolved, and Winnipeg has embraced Academy Florist throughout the city.
